Subjects of Three Empires, Builders of One Nave

God writes straight with crooked lines. That sentence was not coined for tidy lives. It was waiting for Warszawa: for men who left a country that was not on the map, bought a potato patch from Ashbel Morgan at Tod Street and Forman, and raised, under a pastor who would not last, a church that should not have been possible. They did not leave Poland. There was no Poland. Since 1795 the old Commonwealth had been carved among Prussia, Russia, and Austria. The first wave that buil...

The Empty Choirs

There was a time, not so long ago that living memory has forgotten it, when the classrooms of Catholic America were filled with women who had given everything. They wore the habit. They lived in community. They taught for a stipend that would not have kept a lay teacher alive. They were the hidden engine of an entire civilization of schools, hospitals, and orphanages. Then, in the space of a single generation after the Second Vatican Council, they vanished. The numbers are not disputed. In 1965 there were 178,740 to 181,421 religious sisters in the United States. By 1985 the figure had fallen to 115,386. By 2000 it stood at 79,814. In 2025 there were 33,135. That is an 82 percent collapse in sixty years. The average age of those who remain is approximately eighty. Fewer than one percent are under thirty. Between ...

Las Malvinas, otra vez de remate

Imagen
